Former President John Dramani Mahama has responded to calls for him to immediately stop receiving monthly ex-gratias if he is to be believed in his recent promise to scrap severance paywhen elected the president.
The latest caller is Nana Akomea, a former lawmaker and current CEO of Intercity STC; who alleged on the radio that the president receives monthly ex-gratia. Mahama throughsocial media lamented Akomea's views saying, "It issad that politics can make good spirits", referring to Nana Akomea as "my friend".
He explained that as a former president, he gets a monthly pension and not for free as Akomea said.
\"My friend Nana Akomea. It'ssad that politics can make sense! I don't take it for granted. I receive monthly pension," Mahama's May 26, 2023 letter read. What did Akomea say?
Speaking recently on Peace FM's Kokrokoo morning show, Akomea wrote: “Let me give him one challenge, just one challenge, Togbe Afede said he did not agree with him on ex-gratia as a member of theCouncil of State, what did he do? "The ex-gratia they gave him, he returned to the government... after he returnedthe money to the government, President Mahama thanked him for that, saying he is a man of principles... which means Togbe Afede has principles and recovery of ex-gratia.
“President Mahama, today, if you are saying that you do notbelieve in ex-gratia, those that you received, we know that you spent them, so we cannot say that you will bring them...
"But what challenges him is that those he will hire in themonth of May, he should nottake them, stop accepting ex-gratias, as Togbe Afede said, and give him back, he should.follow the same pattern,” he said.
