Erik ten Hag wants Man Utd to sign Harry Kane but there are reasons to think the club may be right to be cautious and walk away from a deal.
MU considers a replacement for Harry Kane this summer
How much is too much for a player can be the missing piece? That is the question Manchester United may have to weigh when it comes to their interest in Harry Kane this summer.
Erik ten Hag is desperate to sign the striker and is certain that he will be a significant upgrade at this team. How many more points will his goals add this season? Given his steady form in the Premier League and the failure to score from a United striker, he is certain to have at least 10 points.
But the equation is not so simple. Kane can improve United's position as a striker, but if they spend too much on the England international, there will still be problems elsewhere in the squad. Then there's the question of longevity. He will turn 30 in July and has a history of ankle injuries. No one can say for sure how long he will remain a true elite striker, although the quality has clearly not diminished.
So the idea that United could end any transfer saga surrounding Kane by calling up Daniel Levy and putting £100m on the table doesn't hold up. That was before we caught the eye of a club commonly known as 'Prime United' asking about players overpaying a 30-year-old with a year left on his CONTRACT.
United considered signing a young striker last season and inquired about a player another club had offered £15m. United were told the price tag was £28m and that 'you are Manchester United, you have a lot of money'. This kind of reputation is easier to acquire and harder to change.
This is the high-profile act United must follow when trying to sign Kane. Ten Hag loves him as a player and he is keen to leave Tottenham, but signing him depends on reaching an agreement with Daniel Levy. It can take most of the summer.
It would be wise for United to set a deadline in their pursuit of Kane. If it can't be done by the end of June, it's not worth the wait.
The departure could be disappointing for fans who cheered him on with chants of "Harry Kane, we'll see you again in June" recently, and it's sure to cause backlash from transfer obsessions on the net. But it's not Kane or a bust for United.
Victor Osimhen is also a direct target and the uncertainty at Napoli since winning the Scudetto could hasten his departure. United are also interested in young Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund and will have other options on the list presented to Ten Hag. Exorbitant transfer fees also do not guarantee success. Recruiting is all about being smart and spending money. Paul Pogba, Harry Maguire, Romelu Lukaku and Angel Di Maria are 4 of the 6 most expensive signings in MU history, but none have succeeded. Rounding out this list are Antony and Jadon Sancho, who have yet to truly deserve their awards.
Age is also a factor that makes MU pursue Kane. Ten Hag wants it because he wants to win now. He appreciates signing experienced players willing to start at Ajax.
But it will give him a mainstay at 30 next season.
