Eddie Howe, the manager of Newcastle United, has acknowledged that he would support making "marquee signings" this summer, and 90min has learned that the club's owners intend to spend heavily in the transfer market.
Despite spending a quarter of a billion pounds since he joined the club in late 2021, Howe has long argued that Newcastle must still be prudent with their money, and he has led them into the Champions League in his first season in charge.
The principal shareholder of the club, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia, was revealed by 90min earlier this month to be willing to spend lavishly. They plan to contribute big sums of money and are interested in significant transactions.
In addition to qualifying for Europe, Newcastle is expected to announce some significant sponsorships this summer, giving them the opportunity to compete for top players throughout the world in the transfer market.
According to a recent rumor from 90min, PIF has identified Neymar as a potential signing. This is due in part to Newcastle's need for a left-sided attacker as well as Neymar's standing in the game.
Howe has now acknowledged that he would approve recruitment of players like Neymar and other A-list athletes.
Howe was questioned about if "marquee" transfers would be on his summer wish list before Newcastle's final match against Chelsea on Sunday.
"Yes, there would be players we'd love to bring in that would be classified in that bracket, I'm sure," he answered.
"Whether that's perceived favorably or as a big signing, then wonderful; for me, it's more about the function they can fulfill in the squad.
I'm not telling myself, 'We have to have one of those guys that checks that box for the fans,' in my head. Even though I'd really like to do that, finding the guy that improves us in the appropriate place is more important.
