When Ross County comes to Rugby Park, manager Derek McInnes has challenged Kilmarnock to play "fire with fire" in order to avoid a certain Premier League relegation play-off.
Killie will just need a point to finish 10th and avoid playing Partick Thistle in the play-off final, but McInnes has told his players "loud and clear" that they must aim for the win.
Following a 3-0 victory against Dundee United on Wednesday, Killie maintained its lead in the struggle for survival. However, County overcame a two-goal deficit against St Johnstone to maintain its position in the race for tenth.
"I said before the United game that I thought four points would be enough, and that's how it has worked out," McInnes remarked.
But we must be certain that it is not the right thing to approach the situation with the intention of making a point.
“It is obvious that we cannot simply sit back and hope to either score a point or win the game against Ross County. That is not possible.We must endeavor to fight fire with fire. Ross County will visit and recognize it as a genuine opportunity, just like we do.
"It's really just that you should strive to win the game and give a performance like you did the other night. We give ourselves a chance if we can accomplish that.
Being very honest with you, McInnes said, "I think the only benefit we have of simply needing a point is maybe later in the game or if we get ahead and then it may maybe play into our hand a little bit.But I truly believe that for me, the players, or anyone else at Kilmarnock to believe that we only need a point is foolish. Ross County will come prepared to win the game, as they always do, but we also need to expect that from ourselves.Instead of just sitting back and being coy and hoping to win, we must play with the goal to go out and win a football game.
