Erling Haaland of Manchester City is the first player to ever earn both the Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season honors in the same season in Premier League history.
Ahead of Sven Botman, Moises Caicedo, Alexander Isak, Alexis Mac Allister, Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard, and Bukayo Saka on the shortlist, the record-breaking attacker won the senior title on Saturday and has since added the second prize.
Haaland has accumulated a long list of milestones since moving to England last summer, including the first player to win both accolades in the same year.
He replaces two-time champion Phil Foden and extends City's winning record in the Young Player of the Season poll.
The award, which was introduced for the 2019–20 season, can be won by any player who is 23 years old or under at the start of the season. This rule has received a lot of criticism in the past.
According to the rules, Haaland, who will be 23 in July, will be qualified to get the honor again the following season. Teammate Foden, who turns 23 on the penultimate day of the current season, is also still eligible.
Only Mac Allister and Odegaard will no longer be eligible from the final shortlist.
Erling Haaland of Manchester City has been named the 2022–23 Premier League Player of the Season.
Haaland was always considered the favorite on a shortlist that also included Kevin De Bruyne, Harry Kane, Martin Odegaard, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Kieran Trippier following a record-breaking season that concluded in Premier League glory for City.
Haaland is the third consecutive City player to win the award following De Bruyne and center-back Ruben Dias. The winner was chosen by a mixture of a public vote, an expert panel, and the captains of each of the 20 Premier League teams.
With his Premier League Young Player of the Season victory, Erling Haaland creates history.
