Erling Haaland of Manchester City has been named the 2022–23 Premier League Player of the Season.
Haaland was always considered the favorite on a shortlist that also included Kevin De Bruyne, Harry Kane, Martin Odegaard, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Kieran Trippier following a record-breaking season that concluded in Premier League glory for City.
Haaland is the third consecutive City player to win the award following De Bruyne and center-back Ruben Dias. The winner was chosen by a mixture of a public vote, an expert panel, and the captains of each of the 20 Premier League teams.
Haaland's victory is really the fourth straight for a City player, following victories by De Bruyne in 2019–20 and 2021/22, as well as Dias' success in the season following those two in 2020–21.
Unquestionably, Haaland's first Premier League season was memorable. The Norwegian surpassed Alan Shearer and Andy Cole's 34 goals to surpass their previous record for the most goals in a single season, moving it up to 36, a total that might rise in Sunday's season-ending match against Brentford.
In the history of English top-flight football, Haaland is second only to Everton star Dixie Dean with 52 goals throughout all competitions. The only player to ever outscore Haaland at the pinnacle of the English game was Dean, who scored an absurd 63 goals in the 1927–28 season.
Only a few days have passed since Haaland won the FWA Footballer of the Year award on Thursday.
"I didn't expect it to be this good!" the striker stated when winning that first prize. "Of course I anticipated it to be good.
I expected to do well when I joined a team that had won the Premier League twice in a row and three times overall. However, I hadn't quite anticipated doing this.
