Manchester United is concerned that Antony may have made his ankle injury worse, which prevented him from finishing the 2021–2022 season.
Antony played only 30 minutes of the 4-1 victory over Chelsea before being taken off the field on a stretcher after injuring his ankle in what appeared to be an innocent-looking challenge from Trevoh Chalobah.
After the game, manager Erik ten Hag said he was unaware of the exact extent of Antony's injury but said the Brazilian appeared to have developed a'serious' issue that would jeopardize his participation in the next FA Cup final.
According to BBC Sport, United's management is now concerned that Antony may have worsened the same injury that kept him out for more than two months at the end of his final season with Ajax.
On March 20, 2022, Antony, who was then a member of Ten Hag's Ajax team, suffered an ankle injury during a 3-2 victory over Feyenoord. It came as a surprise when he was called up for Brazil duty the following week because he played the full 90 minutes but left the game on crutches and entered the press room.
The winger actually began for Brazil against Bolivia and played for 77 minutes before needing to be carried off after receiving a kick to the same ankle. The Brazilian FA did not anticipate a serious injury, and even Ten Hag admitted he believed it to be little more than "a kick."
However, scans performed in Amsterdam showed that the damage was much worse. Although Antony was initially declared out for the balance of April, he would not return to action for Ajax that season, missing the rest of the regular season and even the start of the team's preseason as his absence continued into July.
Although Antony did make a comeback for the current campaign and has mainly avoided injury in Manchester, missing only a few weeks due to various problems, there are worries that this ankle ailment could be more serious.
