Borussia Dortmund held the fate of the season in their hands and squandered a golden opportunity to secure a spot against their Munich rivals.

Borussia Dortmund enter the final day of the season needing a home win over Mainz, who are out of goal, to claim the title regardless of the outcome of Bayern Munich as they are two points behind. .

Haller missed an early penalty and Mainz scored twice in the first half thanks to Andreas Hanche-Olsen and Karim Onisiwo to take the lead.

Dortmund fought back, Guerreiro scored the first, but they only equalized too late, as Bayern won the game, winning the league on goal difference - for the 11th time in a row.

Dortmund knocked on the door the whole game, but couldn't get the ball into the net when it was important. Bellingham was ruled out of the game because he was undergoing treatment for a knee injury, which also kept him out of the 3-0 win over Augsburg last week.

The 19-year-old was seen on the sidelines handing water bottles to teammates during the game, but was left on the pitch grieving with his full-time teammates.

Bellingham, as well as some Dortmund fans, shed tears as the team squandered their chance to win the tournament for the first time since 2012.

The midfielder then had no interest in being pointed in the face by the camera, as he pushed the camera away from him, clearly showing his frustration. Football fans were quick to mock him on social media, with one saying:

'He's got Gerrard's script in mind' - a reference to Steven Gerrard pushing the camera away in 2014 when Liverpool lost the Premier League title after being in the lead.

Continuing the comparison with Liverpool, one fan tweeted:

"Losing the title to your closest opponent by a point on the last day of the season and then crying while pushing the camera? This man was born for Liverpool."

Another said:

"My brother is training to carry on his genes in Madrid. He won't win anything in Spain either."

One fan simply said:

"The light is too strong."

Bellingham was set to move to Real Madrid this summer but had been linked with Liverpool for months before the news broke, but he and the Dortmund team certainly thought it was a missed opportunity.
