Lionel Messi scored his 16th goal of the year to give PSG the necessary point to clinch their historic Ligue 1 victory.

Despite being limited to a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg on Saturday, Paris Saint-Germain nevertheless managed to win their record-breaking 11th Ligue 1 championship thanks to a goal from Lionel Messi.

Just before the hour at Stade de la Meinau, Messi, whose contract with PSG expires at the end of the current campaign, scored his 16th goal of the year to put his team ahead.

With a goal in the 79th minute from substitute Kevin Gameiro, Strasbourg prevented Christophe Galtier's team from winning, but PSG still had time to successfully defend their Ligue 1 title.

The draw maintained Frederic Antonetti's hosts' six-point lead over 17th-placed Nantes, who lost to Lille, and secured Strasbourg's spot in the top division.

Gianluigi Donnarumma's clumsy ball was intercepted by El Chadaille Bitshiabu in the 15th minute, giving PSG a scare. However, Sergio Ramos reacted fast to block the forward's shot from a close angle.

Donnarumma made a quick reflex save on Diallo, while Matz Sels made a superb save to save Renato Sanches' effort after a Kylian Mbappe corner at the opposite end.

Strasbourg kept posing the larger offensive threat, and they came near once more when Diallo's thunderous 20-yard volley struck the right post.

Messi, however, gave PSG the lead 14 minutes into the second half by collecting Mbappe's square ball in the area and flicking it into the far corner.

Soon after, the pair nearly switched places for a second goal when Messi crossed for Mbappe, who missed from within the six-yard box.

Gameiro, a former player for PSG, capitalized to steal a draw 11 minutes from time after Donnarumma parried Morgan Sanson's original attempt, keeping PSG from winning.

PSG are the reigning French champions, though perhaps not in the most convincing way.

With their 11th domestic championship, they exceed Saint-Etienne's (10) record to become the team with the most victories in the history of the French premier division.
