The celebratory Hatters won the illustrious 6-5 sudden-death shootout thanks to Fankaty Dabo's missed penalty.

Luton won the Sky Bet Championship play-off final against Coventry in a dramatic sudden-death penalty shootout, capping up their fantastical ascent from non-league to the Premier League.

The Hatters are celebrating their first promotion to the top division since 1992, just nine years after concluding their five-season run in the Conference Premier.

When Coventry favorite Gustavo Hamer overcame Jordan Clark's opening goal at Wembley, previous point deductions and disappointments were put in the past.

After extra time, the score remained tied at one, and Fankaty Dabo's missed penalty gave Luton a dramatic 6-5 sudden-death shootout triumph.

A £170 million match between clubs that have both endured hardships during their decades away from the spotlight was a harsh way for the season to come to a close.

Together, these sides were promoted from League Two in 2018, and the latter team led at the break thanks to a goal from Clark for the powerful Hatters.

After skipper Tom Lockyer's alarming early collapse, Rob Edwards' team impressively recovered, but Coventry improved after the interval.

As the game entered extra time, Hamer, City's semi-final hero against Middlesbrough, effectively leveled the score.

Joe Taylor appeared to have given Luton the lead in the 116th minute, but the video assistant ref ruled that Taylor handled Jonathan Panzo.

Luton's progress to the Premier League was decided by a shootout, and Coventry's substitute Dabo was the first to miss. As they rejoiced in front of their supporters, the players hoisted up Lockyer's shirt.

Both coaches stayed with the lineups that guaranteed them a spot at Wembley, where Gabriel Osho believed he had given his team an early advantage.

Following a Lockyer header, the Luton defender bundled home, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

When the Luton captain stumbled to the ground while jogging back, frustration swiftly changed to worry.
