Arsenal legend admitted he “should have joined Man Utd” after multiple calls from Sir Alex Ferguson.

An Arsenal legend admitted he should have joined Manchester United instead of Chelsea back in 2001.

In a surprising revelation, an esteemed figure in Arsenal’s history, Emmanuel Petit, has confessed that he should have chosen to join Manchester United instead of Chelsea when he had the opportunity in 2001. Petit, who had spent three successful seasons with Arsenal, forming an intimidating midfield duo with his compatriot Patrick Vieira, left the club to join Barcelona in 2000. However, his stint with the Catalan giants was short-lived, leading to speculation about his return to the Premier League. At the time, both Manchester United and Chelsea were reportedly interested in securing his services, and there were even whispers of a potential reunion with his former club, Arsenal.

Ultimately, Petit made the fateful decision to sign with Chelsea, a choice that he now deeply regrets. The retired footballer recently admitted in an interview with FourFourTwo that he should have opted for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United instead. Petit revealed that he had received approaches from both Arsenal and United, and although his former manager Arsene Wenger expressed a strong desire to bring him back to Arsenal, Petit felt that the club’s enthusiasm was lacking when he had joined Barcelona a year earlier. Drawing an analogy, he likened it to the dissolution of a marriage, explaining that if one doesn’t feel desired, there is little incentive to return.

Adding more weight to his revelation, Petit disclosed that Sir Alex Ferguson personally reached out to him on two separate occasions in a bid to entice him to Old Trafford. The Manchester United manager made a persuasive case, engaging Petit in meaningful conversations about the prospect of joining the Red Devils. However, despite Ferguson’s efforts, Petit succumbed to the influence of his then-wife, French actress Agathe de La Fontaine, who expressed a strong desire to return to London rather than relocate to Manchester.

In hindsight, Petit acknowledges that he made a grave error by ignoring Ferguson’s overtures and choosing Chelsea instead. Both Manchester United and Arsenal went on to enjoy tremendous success in the subsequent years, claiming multiple Premier League titles and lifting numerous trophies. In contrast, Petit’s time at Chelsea was far from fruitful, featuring sparingly in just 55 appearances over a three-year period. The Frenchman’s career came to an end in 2004, without adding any significant silverware to his collection.

Petit’s candid admission serves as a reminder of the pivotal moments and decisions that can shape a footballer’s legacy. In this instance, a legendary Arsenal player reflects on the road not taken and contemplates the potential glory that could have been achieved in the colors of Manchester United.
