Arsenal could now ‘pay up contract’ of £140k-a-week star at the Emirates.
A £140,000-per-week star no longer has a future at Arsenal after falling out of favour under Mikel Arteta.
According to journalist Paul Brown, Arsenal may consider terminating the contract of Nicolas Pepe, a £140,000-per-week star who is deemed to have no future at the club under manager Mikel Arteta. Pepe was signed by Arsenal from Lille in 2019 for a club-record fee of £72 million but has failed to establish himself in Arteta's plans.
Reports from Football.London suggest that Arsenal is looking to offload Pepe during the upcoming summer transfer window, considering him surplus to requirements. If suitable offers are not received, the Gunners could potentially terminate his contract. Currently on loan at Nice, Pepe's temporary deal does not include an option for the French club to make the move permanent.
Brown believes Arsenal may encounter difficulties in finding a buyer for Pepe, as the Ivory Coast international could wait until he becomes a free agent to secure a move to another club. Pepe is set to enter the final year of his £140,000-per-week contract in the summer, giving Arsenal a limited window of opportunity to cash in on him.
Brown acknowledges the possibility that Arsenal could pay off Pepe's contract if necessary to create space in the squad. It is evident that the club does not see a future for him and would prefer to part ways sooner rather than later.
While Pepe has shown glimpses of his abilities with 27 goals and 21 assists in 112 appearances for Arsenal, it may be challenging to find a buyer willing to pay a significant fee for his services. His loan spell at Nice has also showcased his potential impact, with eight goals to his name. Pepe is reportedly interested in staying at Nice beyond the current campaign, but the French club is taking its time before deciding on a potential deal.
Given Nice's record transfer fee of around £20 million for Terem Moffi, they are unlikely to match the fee Arsenal paid for Pepe. This further complicates the process of finding a suitable transfer for the Ivorian winger.
