This  looks really unlikely now – Romano shares potential early blow for Pochettino at Chelsea.

Chelsea: Pochettino wants to keep Mason Mount.

Mount's Future Uncertain.
The incoming Blues boss may have his hands tied in the transfer market this summer.

Romano has shared news that could spell trouble for Mauricio Pochettino, the incoming manager at Chelsea. It appears that Pochettino is keen on retaining Mason Mount, but the midfielder’s contract situation suggests that he may be on his way out of the club. Mount, who currently has just one year left on his contract, has been engaged in unsuccessful talks regarding an extension, indicating that he could be eyeing a departure from Stamford Bridge.

A host of top clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool, have shown interest in the 24-year-old, further fueling speculation of his potential exit during the upcoming summer transfer window. However, Pochettino has expressed a desire to build a team centered around English players at Chelsea and is reportedly keen on keeping Mount.

Unfortunately for the Argentine manager, this preference may not align with the club’s decision to sell a player he wishes to retain, potentially limiting his influence in the transfer market from the outset.

Romano highlighted this predicament during an episode of The House Of Champions Podcast, emphasizing the complexity of the ongoing contract negotiations between Chelsea and Mount. He expressed skepticism about the likelihood of a successful resolution, indicating that the discussions have been ongoing for months without reaching an agreement. Although Pochettino holds Mount in high regard and would prefer to keep him, the club faces a difficult decision as the player’s contract expires next summer. Losing a valuable asset like Mount on a free transfer is a risk that Chelsea is seemingly unwilling to take, which may lead them to entertain offers for his departure.

Considering Chelsea’s disappointing season, which saw them finish outside the top half of the table and miss out on European competitions, Mount might benefit from a fresh start elsewhere, even if it means joining a rival club. The midfielder has endured a challenging campaign, scoring only three goals and providing two assists in 24 league appearances, while also enduring a recent injury setback. The club’s acquisition of Enzo Fernandez in January and the rumored interest in Manuel Ugarte from Sporting CP suggest that Chelsea could be prepared to move forward without Mount in their midfield.

For Mount, a departure could offer him the opportunity to secure a potentially substantial transfer fee for Chelsea, rather than leaving for free next year. It would also allow him to join a club competing in European competitions, something Chelsea cannot offer next season. Mount’s reported preference for Manchester United, a club involved in the Champions League, suggests that he desires a move to a team with higher aspirations.

In conclusion, despite Pochettino’s desire to retain Mason Mount, the ongoing contract complications and Chelsea’s potential willingness to part ways with the midfielder could pose an early challenge for the incoming manager. Mount, meanwhile, may benefit from a fresh start at a club competing in European competitions, potentially securing a large transfer fee for Chelsea in the process.
