The two teams' status in the Premier League was in doubt going into the last round, but Everton's 1-0 win over Bournemouth ultimately insured their survival.
Gary Lineker praised Everton after his former team beat his childhood team Leicester to stay in the Premier League.
The two teams were in danger of being relegated going into the final round of games on Sunday, but Everton's 1-0 win over Bournemouth finally insured their safety.
At one point, it appeared that the Foxes may be the ones to stay in the league after they quickly seized the lead against West Ham, but Everton's outcome made their eventual 2-1 victory meaningless.
Two points ahead of Leicester at the end of the season, the Toffees finished in 17th position, while Leeds were also sent down after losing 4-1 to Tottenham.
"Absolutely gutted, but glad it's Everton," tweeted former England striker Lineker, who started his career at Leicester before playing a season there in the middle of the 1980s. Love that fantastic football team very much. Congratulations.”
Seven years after winning the Premier League title and just two years after winning the FA Cup, Leicester was relegated.
Lineker continued, "Leicester. I would have snatched your hand off if you had offered me the choice eight years ago of winning the Premier League and the FA Cup while also being relegated. Additionally, I would have advised you not to act so absurdly.
Leicester has had a terrible season, and TV analyst Roy Keane was unsure of how quickly they could turn things around.
They didn't seem to gain much momentum into the season after a poor start, the former Manchester United midfielder stated on Sky Sports. The fact that they are where they are is not shocking.
"Clubs can recover, but it is difficult. My opinion is that Leicester has to be rebuilt.
Gary Lineker praises Everton but expresses "gut-wrenching" sadness over Leicester's relegation.
