After a 2-2 draw on Sunday at Valencia, a late Samuel Lino goal sent Espanyol into LaLiga relegation.

After a thrilling tie with fellow strugglers Valencia on Sunday, Espanyol was demoted from LaLiga.

With Valencia holding on for a 2-2 draw in the 93rd minute thanks to a goal from Samuel Lino, Luis Garcia's team will not be competing in the top division next season.

The White and Blues will be down to the Segunda Division, joining Elche, which has already been demoted. A number of other teams, including as Real Valladolid, Celta Vigo, Almeria, and Valencia, are still in jeopardy.

With one game left, Valladolid is in a tight battle for survival in 18th place, one point behind Celta and Almeria and two points behind Valencia, Getafe, and Cadiz.

One of the many Mexican soccer players competing in the top divisions in Europe is César Montes. He is also one of the select few whose season is uncertain. Unlike other countrymen Hirving Lozano, Orbelin Pineda, and Santiago Giménez, who have all won championships with their teams, or Guillermo Ochoa, who has kept Salernitana from being demoted. The Betis of Andrés Guardado, the PSV of Erick Gutiérrez, and the Ajax of Edson lvarez have all earned berths in the Europa League for the upcoming season. Johan Vásquez and Cremonese, who were already demoted in Series A, are not so lucky. With two games remaining and three points separating them from safety, Espanyol, who are second from last in the Spanish premier division, might meet 'El Cachorro' Montes' demise.

Following Mexico's World Cup participation in Qatar in December 2022, Montes signed a $8 million contract with the Periquitos. He had previously played with Monterrey. The defender signed a long-term deal with the Catalan club that runs through the summer of 2028. The center defender quickly acclimated and easily slipped into the back four. In the second half of the season, he has been one of the team's most reliable players, missing just three games, including two because of head injuries. He hasn't been able to prevent Espanyol from slipping into the relegation zone though; the squad has won just six games this year and can no longer rely on themselves to stay out of Liga.
