Anthony Gordon has suddenly admitted he is not fit to play for Newcastle United this season after leaving Everton.

Gordon was targeted by Chelsea last summer after impressing with Everton last season, but the Toffees turned down offers from the Blues.

The young forward was then targeted by fan protests at the start of the season, even stopping himself when he tried to leave Goodison Park.

Unsurprisingly, he decided to switch jobs in January, trading the relegation battle for a Champions League spot with Newcastle.

The Toffees' statement shows no love has been lost between the player and the club when he moved to the North East for £45m. Fans were unimpressed with him when he returned from the blue Merseyside side, as he featured in Newcastle's game against his former side.

Gordon didn't really shine at St James' Park and started just four games for Eddie Howe's side, eventually scoring his first goal in a draw with Chelsea on the final day of the season.

And after that game, the 22-year-old admitted he wasn't fit enough to play in Howe's system.

"I'm very happy to have scored. You can see that in my celebration, all the emotions came out. It's been a really tough year, not just at Newcastle, and it's good to have him," Gordon said.

"It's difficult just because of my level, the people here are so much higher. I had a tough game against them and then I got injured. I always felt like I was going. I feel I have a lot of work to do and it's tough mentally and physically. Gordon kisses the Newcastle badge after his first goal for the club. Image:

"I feel like I have a big summer ahead of me now, so I'm putting myself in a really good position for next year.

"This summer I attended Euro U21, so my fitness will be better than ever because there I was absolutely explosive!

"So in this team you have to be very healthy. The coach demands a lot from the players and that's something I didn't expect and didn't know. But I know next year I will be involved."

It is a pity for Everton that he feels he is not fit enough to play for another team despite making 12 appearances for Frank Lampard before the manager was sacked. Advertisement

Chelsea's all-time leading scorer was accused of lowering standards at Stamford Bridge the second he played there and that could well be a clue that the same thing happened at work. his past, especially with Gordon's revelation.
