According to the Dutchman, "no-one would be happy" with the predicament the club captain is in.

Harry Maguire may quit Manchester United this summer, according to Erik ten Hag, if the defender decides he is dissatisfied with his lack of playing time.

The club captain was responsible for several high-profile mistakes, most recently Sevilla's elimination from the Europa League last month. The club captain only participated in 16 Premier League games this season.

Ten Hag has constantly lauded the 30-year-old's effect at Old Trafford, even when he has spent extended periods of time away from the club. The defender arrived in 2018 from Leicester for £80 million, a record cost for a defender, and is under contract until 2025.

In the former Ajax manager's debut season, Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane have been the primary central-defensive pairing, with Luke Shaw coming in occasionally, as the team picked up 17 top-flight clean sheets, the most of any team in the division.

The manager has now put forth the sturdiest indication yet that Maguire's time at United might be drawing to a close.

In an interview with The Times, Ten Hag stated that "nobody would be happy with this situation." He is struggling. He constantly puts up his utmost effort during training.

Because of how skillfully he handled the issue and how he behaved, the team needed him as captain.

Raphael Varane, a tremendous opponent, is there (at center-back), so he has a lot of competition.

"Let's just say I'm glad he's here and when we needed him, he did his job," he continued. But he also needs to make a choice.

David De Gea, who has made costly errors of his own, including at Seville and the most recent loss to West Ham, will stay at the club, according to Ten Hag, though he might not be assured a spot in the lineup.

With 43 goals allowed, the team finished third in the Premier League defensively, behind champions Manchester City and Newcastle. De Gea was always on the field and won the Golden Glove award for the goalkeeper with the most shutouts.
