After acquiring Scotland international Michael Devlin from Hibernian, Livingston boss David Martindale thinks he has found a top-tier defender.

The 29-year-old player, formerly of Hamilton, Aberdeen, and Fleetwood, signed a temporary contract with Hibs in January after a devastating injury ended his career after three appearances for the national team in 2019.

The only time Devlin played for the Edinburgh club was as a late substitute in the season-ending tie with Hearts last Saturday.

He will make the quick move across the Lothians to join Livingston as his contract with Hibs is about to expire. He will bolster a defense that has been weakened by the exits of important players Nicky Devlin and Jack Fitzwater due to freedom of contract.

Martindale told the Lions' website, "I'm thrilled to bring Mikey over the line.

He has a great deal of experience at a very high caliber. Over the past two to three seasons, Mikey has struggled with injuries, but I am certain that the club's excellent talent set will enable us to get Mikey back to playing Premier League football. He is a decent age and played football for his country in late 2019. He is a leader on the park and is capable of filling several positions. He is a versatile player who has experience playing at right back, defensive midfielder, and the center of defense.

Without a doubt, he would still be playing for his country and at the top of the league if it weren't for his injuries during the past two seasons.

Following their loan stints, defender Loick Ayina of Huddersfield Town and midfielder Jamie McGrath of Wigan Athletic both returned to their home clubs.

After finishing last in the Scottish Premiership, United was demoted.

The four players who were released all joined Tannadice in 2019, with Blackpool-born Edwards, 29, appearing 36 times this year.

Smith, 27, formerly of Dundee, and Harkes, 29, both of whom were signed from DC United, both appeared 34 times this term.

Pawlett, 32, who joined from MK Dons, made just 13 appearances throughout the current season.
