Liverpool and Manchester United have received a boost in their transfer plans after Edwin van der Sar stepped down as Ajax chief executive.
The former Reds goalkeeper has left after a disastrous season with the Dutch giants, during which they failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 14 years.
“After almost 11 years on the board, I am finished,” van der Sar said in a statement.
However, his departure could be good news for Liverpool and Manchester United, who are both interested in signing Ajax defender Jurrien Timber.

Liverpool are on the hunt for defensive signings this summer, with Trent Alexander-Arnold playing the new full-back/midfielder role. According to multiple reports, Timber has been identified as a potential addition, while his girlfriend was said to be house hunting in Liverpool last month.
Thirty miles later, the likes of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof would be sent off Old Trafford, leaving Erik ten Hag in need of protection.

Despite primarily playing as a centre-back for Ajax, Timber has also been used at right-back for the Netherlands, making him an attractive option for the United boss.
And it looks like both clubs have an even better chance of securing his signature this summer, after van der Sar packed his bags.
Liverpool and Man Utd are promoted for transfer
Manchester United had initially tried to sign Timber last summer, but the 21-year-old has instead decided to sign a one-year contract extension with Ajax. Advertisement
Van der Sar would have been influential in the deal, but with the United legend now no longer at Ajax, Timber could choose to move to a new pasture.
Furthermore, the versatile defender has openly admitted that a transfer could happen this summer.
Speaking earlier in the campaign, he told Ziggy Sport (quoted via Voetbal Primeur):
"For me, it's the same situation as last season. If I say:
I'm gone, it has to come back. Playstyle is important, minutes of competition… Participation in prizes is also important. my favorite country? I dare not say so.
"That's why I'm doing the same as last season. Chances are yes, it can happen, but I'm fine here too. I'm still young and everything suits me here." I'll take a look at it."
