But that won't stop the Reds boss from undertaking another squad overhaul during the summer transfer window. If he can sign his main targets, Ten Hag could eventually buy at least four new players to fit into his starting line-up.
Some weaknesses have appeared in the campaign, especially in defense and attack. Ten Hag is likely prioritizing those two slots as soon as the window opens, with Harry Kane high on his shopping list. Kane has scored 30 Premier League goals for Tottenham this season, only Erling Haaland has scored more. He is on track to break Alan Shearer's record for total goals scored in the premier league.
But his incredible record in front of goal doesn't match his success on the title front. And with his contract set to expire in just a year, the situation looks ripe for United to try to make a move.
If such a move is successful, Kane will line up directly as a striker in Ten Hag's system. He will certainly be a major upgrade to Wout Weghorst and Anthony Martial and will likely turn United into perennial contenders for titles.
There could also be a big change at the other end of the pitch, with David de Gea yet to sign a new contract. The Spaniard's current contract expires at the end of the season and even if it does extend, it is likely that Ten Hag will sign a new goalkeeper. That could come for Porto's Diogo Costa, who is expected to be out this summer. Costa plays in Portugal, United recently sent scouts to watch him play.
Costa will not be the only change in defense, with a new right-back also likely to be signed. Jeremie Frimpong appears to be Ten Hag's main target, with the Bayer Leverkusen star close to a move to Old Trafford.
With United almost certain in defence when they can pick the best players, Ten Hag could go on to pick Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane as their first-choice central midfield duo. Luke Shaw has impressed as an emergency centre-back but should instead be allowed to play at left-back. In midfield, United played their best with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, a pair likely to continue to be Ten Hag's picks.
There could be further changes, with Mason Mount appearing to be one of Ten Hag's main goals. Mount looks set to leave Chelsea, with United one of the favorites to sign the England international.
If that happens, it could lead to a change in tactics, with Mount joining Casemiro and Eriksen in central midfield. Bruno Fernandes will then be given a free kick in the attacking midfield.
This means a small change of duty for Marcus Rashford, who will then join Kane .
