Despite the fact that Mauricio Pochettino's hiring at Stamford Bridge was only formally confirmed on Monday, he has already made a number of significant Chelsea transfer decisions.
If all goes according to plan for Chelsea, Mauricio Pochettino might be given a sizable transfer budget this summer to sign his top targets. The former Tottenham manager's appointment as the Blues' new head coach was officially announced earlier this week, but according to football.london, a deal had been reached as early as May, allowing Pochettino to get some behind-the-scenes work done. The futures of Joao Felix, Denis Zakaria, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, and Mason Mount appear to have already been decided. After their loan spells ended, Pochettino decided not to sign Felix or Zakaria permanently, sending them back to Atletico Madrid and Juventus, respectively. Loftus-Cheek and Mount are two other players who may be headed out the door.
With just over a month until the summer window opens, an exit almost appears imminent, even if neither party wants it to happen. The Blues are still asking for £70 million to approve Mount's departure, and his sale might account for a large portion of Pochettino's summer budget, the most of which will likely come from player sales.
According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea is hoping to earn as much as £280 million through the sale of 15 players, with three going on loan or free transfers, two returning to their original clubs, and 10 leaving for a fee.
There must be a big exodus, and while Chelsea obtaining that sum is doubtful, a similar sum is possible. Todd Boehly could easily provide Pochettino a sizable sum of money collected from sales to reinvest into the squad for additions consistent with his tactics and ideals just by the sheer quantity of players being sold. Victor Osimhen, Dusan Vlahovic, and Lautaro Martinez have been proposed as striker alternatives, and David Raya, Andre Onana, and Emiliano Martinez have been eliminated from consideration as goalkeepers, according to The Guardian.
