President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced that Ghana is trying to attract two million foreign visitors that would result in a $4 billion spending effect by 2025 as part of initiatives to help tourism play its leading role in the economic development of the country.
According to him, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture has been tasked with stepping up its promotional operations, policies, and programmes in order to meet the goal as part of the measures set in place.
At the inaugural Presidential Summit on Tourism held at the Peduase Presidential Lodge in the Eastern Region yesterday, President Akufo-Addo made this announcement.
Summit
Participants from all government agencies and departments, as well as representatives from the corporate sector, attended the two-day conference that the president arranged.
"Rethinking tourism for economic growth and job creation" is the focus of the article.
President Akufo-Addo attended the paper presentations, panel discussions, and questions and answers sessions following the opening ceremony and all other events, which is unusual among presidential correspondents from different media outlets.
According to estimates, the tourism industry will generate 10 out of every 100 new jobs globally by 2033.
Data
President Akufo-Addo cited data to claim that the tourist industry was expanding once again after the COVID-19-related slump.
Stats
He pointed out that domestic tourism increased from 600,000 in 2021 to roughly a million in 2022 and that international arrivals increased by 81% in 2022 compared to 2021 data.
People working included farmers who produced food, caterers and cooks, tour guides, drivers, makers of handicrafts, musicians, and painters, among others.
The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, as well as the Ghana Tourism Authority, have been tasked with continuing to take the initiative as the government places tourism at the forefront of national development, according to President Akufo-Addo.
"We are developing a strong tourism industry, and several tourist destinations are presently receiving upgrades.
We are adamant about creating a tourism economy where hospitality, the arts, and culture serve as catalysts for growth," he continued.
Proposals
The conference should concentrate on a four-fold strategy, from reservation promotion to policy leadership and cooperation, according to President Akufo-Addo's suggestion.
He emphasised that the nation needed to protect its resources, saying that "we are the guardians of Ghana's natural wonders, and it is our responsibility to safeguard them for future generations and strengthen our commitment to environmental conservation, combat climate change, and promote eco-friendly practises in the tourism industry.
He went on to say it would protect the natural legacy and draw eco-aware tourists, who were becoming more prevalent globally and were looking for holiday areas that matched their ideals.
In order to highlight the diversity the nation has to offer, President Akufo-Addo urged effective marketing efforts, improved digital presence, and targeted infrastructure expenditures to amplify Ghana's distinctive appeal in the international arena.
