Ade Mafe still remembers the first time he met Jose Mourinho.
Mafe, a former England Olympic sprinter, spent more than a decade at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea fitness coach, witnessing the club's transformation under Roman Abramovich.
This includes the arrival of Mourinho in 2004, after winning the Champions League with Porto. Speaking exclusively to Daily Star Sport, Mafe gave us our first impressions of the man who single-handedly reshaped English football in the mid-2000s.
“Fear,” Mafe replied when asked to recall how he felt when he first met Mourinho. "You know he's serious. You know he's serious about what he does. I don't know if the Jose of today is like his Jose back then, but he's serious about what he is. he is doing.
"Everything was done well with a lot of experience behind him. He can speak six languages ??after working as a translator in Barcelona. I knew not to mess around."
Is Jose Mourinho the greatest coach of the past 25 years? Let us know in the comments section.
Mourinho's way of managing players, especially with this Chelsea side, is often cited as one of the main reasons for the Blues' success under him. And Mafe says that has also been translated for the staff.
"The first time I heard about him at the club, I went to the training ground and he said 'what are you doing here? I see your face on the web.
"You know right away that he's done his homework because he knows right away the people who collaborate with him. I explained to him what I was doing and that I wanted to win, and he told me. I:
"I want you on my team."
"He had a fitness trainer, Rui Faria, and after the first year I basically followed him, and I just thought 'you know what, you pay me to do this. , I'll take what you do as a backup.' "
And that's what Mafe did, taking Faria's work and copying it with the Chelsea reserve team to ensure that Mourinho's DNA was spread throughout the club.
The Blues have won consecutive Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two League Cup titles during Mourinho's first term at Stamford Bridge. The 60-year-old hopes to win another major title on Wednesday night when his Roma side take on Sevilla in the Europa League final.
