After falling just short of winning the Europa League on Wednesday night, Jose Mourinho dramatically waved at Roma's supporters and threw his runners-up medal into the throng.
Prior to Roma's trip to Budapest, Mourinho had a spotless record in European finals. However, he witnessed his team lose 4-1 on penalties to Sevilla, giving the Spanish team their seventh Europa League championship in as few as 17 years.
Paulo Dybala gave Mourinho's team the lead shortly after the hour mark, but Gianluca Mancini's own goal in the 55th minute tied the game and made it a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation.
Mourinho had a pristine record in European championship games prior to Roma's journey to Budapest. However, he saw Sevilla win the Europa League seven times in as few as 17 years after his team lost 4-1 on penalties to them.
Soon after the hour mark, Paulo Dybala gave Mourinho's team the lead, but Gianluca Mancini's own goal in the 55th minute leveled the score and forced a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation.
Since Mourinho has drawn interest from a number of European clubs as well as organizations in Saudi Arabia, much of this season has been spent speculating about the Portuguese manager's future at Roma.
After Wednesday's Europa League final, speculation about his future will only increase because the seasoned manager looked to wave heartfelt goodbye to Roma's fans before going into the changing room.
Pundits After the match, Don Hutchinson and Gaizka Mendieta responded to Mourinho's medal toss.
According to Mendieta, who spoke to BT Sport, "He gave the medal to his fan as a different way of saying "I don't want a silver medal"." The fan will always remember it, so that's good.
Hutchinson, meanwhile, made a suggestion that Mourinho's time at Roma may be up as a result of the gesture.
He remarked, "I don't know what's going to happen, but it's great that he gave it to the youngster.
I observed him on the field in a huddle with his squad, and from what you're attempting to read, it appeared positive.
Then he presented the child with the medal. He'll need time to think things through, but I believe they were good; the only question is whether he'd be interested in a new project.
Taylor's performance in the championship game drew criticism from Mourinho, who was cautioned in the last seconds of extra time. He also questioned Taylor's future at Roma.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Mourinho stated that he "wants to stay at Roma." 'However, not only do I deserve more, but so do my players.
"I'm getting a little tired of being the coach, the club's spokesperson, and the one who claims we were robbed after every game," said the coach. Acting on all fronts is getting old for me.
We won't be participating in the Champions League next year, which is a good thing because we're not suited for it.
And let's hope Taylor does the same bull**** he did tonight just when officiating matches in the Champions League and not in the Europa
