Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi's goals allayed the disappointment of losing the previous year.

On this day in 2019, Liverpool won their sixth European Cup after defeating Tottenham 2-0 in the Champions League final in Madrid.

After losing 3-1 to Real Madrid in the 2018 final in Kiev, Jurgen Klopp's team returned to the big stage in the following year with the intention of improving.

They did so while still thinking back on a spectacular Premier League campaign in which they finished with 97 points but still fell just short of Manchester City for the championship.

After both teams had successfully navigated a way to Madrid, they had three weeks to ponder on a close call and to get ready for their matchup with Spurs.

After losing 3-0 to Barcelona in the first leg of their semi-final, Liverpool appeared to be out of the competition. However, two goals from Divock Origi and one from Georginio Wijnaldum on a remarkable night at Anfield gave them new life.

With only 35 minutes remaining in their last-four match against Ajax in Amsterdam, Mauricio Pochettino's team also needed a miracle to advance to the championship game. They were down 3-0 on aggregate but overcame it thanks to a hat-trick from Lucas Moura, who put them ahead on away goals.

The stage was set for a classic in Spain, but despite an exciting start, the match fell short of expectations.

Within 22 seconds of the game's beginning, Moussa Sissoko was found to have handled a cross from Sadio Mane, and referee Damir Skomina signaled to the spot.

Although Klopp's first trophy as Reds manager was not sealed until substitute Origi scored three minutes from time, Spurs never really looked like pulling back into the game after Mohamed Salah converted the next penalty kick past Hugo Lloris.

After losing his previous six cup finals, the German added, "I just want to celebrate that we won it. Everything else is not crucial.

To be honest, I feel primarily relieved. As you can imagine, my family and I are rather close, so I was relieved for them.
