The report claims that the Manchester team believe negotiations could be difficult and lengthy beyond the end of next summer's transfer window.
United are desperate to sign a new striker this summer as they look for a long-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, who left the club in November.
Wout Weghorst was loaned out by Burnley in January but the Netherlands international failed to score a goal for United and is now tipped to return to the Clarets.
