Jose Mourinho, the coach of Roma, was destined to surpass all other European managers in terms of accolades.

Gonzalo Montiel saved another penalty kick for Sevilla, who made it seven wins in the Europa League and handed Roma manager Jose Mourinho his first loss in a European championship.

When Paulo Dybala overcame an ankle ailment he has been dealing with for the past month to put the Serie A side in ahead in a scrappy match in Budapest, Mourinho was on pace to become the most decorated European manager in history with six championships.

Gianluca Mancini, who had assisted Dybala, slammed the ball into his own goal as the game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes. Roger Ibanez then missed from the spot before Montiel converted the go-ahead penalty to give the Spaniards a 4-1 shootout victory.

The Argentine, who converted the go-ahead penalty kick in last year's World Cup final, missed the first attempt from 12 yards, but Rui Patricio sprinted off his line just in time to force a second attempt, which Montiel executed flawlessly this time.

While Sevilla did manage to win the Europa League for a record-extending seventh time and earn a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season, it was an ugly process that required referee Anthony Taylor and fourth official Michael Oliver to frequently stop play and speak with or warn players and coaches on both sides.

There weren't many opportunities since both benches were tetchy from the start, conscious of what was at stake, and kept Taylor on his toes. Both sides started hesitantly and there were frequent breaks.

After Tammy Abraham, an Englishman, received a blow to the head, the referee made his first significant judgement using VAR, but Nemanja Gudelj regaining the ball prevented a penalty from being awarded.

Ivan Rakitic was fouled in his own half, igniting the game, and as Sevilla's defense appeared to expect a foul, Mancini took advantage and his through ball allowed Dybala to cross Bono in the 35th minute. Rafa Mir, a replacement, was ticketed to loud protests from Sevilla.
