William Saliba and Arsenal are still in contract negotiations, but new terms are still being worked out, sources said 90min.
Sources close to Saliba's representatives have told 90min that they are not attempting to pressure Saliba into leaving the club. Instead, they are requesting a deal that is appropriate for a player who is widely regarded as one of the best young defenders in the world.
Before suffering an injury that forced him to miss the final few weeks of the season, the 22-year-old center back had a brilliant first full season with Arsenal. He shone at the center of their defense. In fact, his forced absence during the last several weeks of the campaign served to emphasize how significant he had been.
Saliba moved to Arsenal from Saint-Etienne in 2019, however he played for Nice and later Marseille throughout the following three seasons while out on loan at different clubs in his home France.
When Saliba returned to Arsenal last summer, Mikel Arteta gave him a chance to play in the first team, and he took advantage of the opportunity, earning him international notoriety for his performance at the time.
As 90min reported, Arsenal started talking to Saliba back in September, but they are still far from agreeing to all of his requests. Wesley Fofana, a fellow Saint-Etienne graduate, recently signed a lucrative contract with Chelsea, and it is reported that Saliba feels that he is more than entitled to a comparable offer.
Sources familiar with the matter acknowledge that Saliba has rejected recent advances, but Arsenal is still hopeful that the player wants to stay and will reach an agreement on new terms before the start of the upcoming season.
Though few expected the club to mount such a serious title challenge, the club's success in the US and a savvy summer transfer window helped foster an optimistic atmosphere among fans going into the new season.
