Mateo Kovacic of Chelsea has reportedly being pursued by Manchester City this summer, according to 90min.
In 2018, Kovacic transferred from Real Madrid to Chelsea, first on loan and then permanently for an estimated £40 million. The Croatian has played in over 200 games and has four championships to his name, including the Champions League in 2021.
But his agreement is set to expire the following year. In March, 90min stated that Chelsea wanted Kovacic to stay even though negotiations hadn't advanced and the player and his agents were actively considering other options.
Kovacic has now made it obvious to Chelsea that he is not willing to even discuss signing a new deal at Stamford Bridge, 90min can now report.
The 29-year-old was already a target for Manchester City, who could soon lose captain Ilkay Gundogan to Barcelona on a free transfer as his contract expires. Frenkie de Jong is still a target for Manchester United even though a full deal fell through last summer, and the Red Devils view Kovacic as a viable alternative.
However, sources have told 90min that City is the team that has begun its contact.
It is not anticipated that Kovacic will find it tough to depart Stamford Bridge due to Chelsea. The Blues are ready for the player to select his next team and have not set a prohibitive asking price. He would want to remain in England, in his opinion.
Todd Boehly entered the Premier League with a reputation as a "disruptor," top hat tipped to one side, and dollar dollars dripping from his pocket.
By awarding players contracts that were particularly long and using the accounting technique of amortization to divide the transfer fee across the duration of a player's contract, Chelsea's free-spending new ownership were able to get around Financial Fair Play restrictions. Due to the worrisome nature of this loophole exploitation, UEFA is considering limiting contracts to five years.
