Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is expected to be active in the summer transfer market - and he could even field a brand new midfielder on the opening day of the 2023/24 campaign.
Liverpool have had a season to forget and now the attention is on how they can improve next season.
Fifth place is meant for the Champions League and they will instead have to endure difficulties in the Europa League fixture list, which will be tough. Their poor campaign was mainly due to an inconsistent part of the season that kept their flaws exposed.
Midfield is considered to be their main weakness after many neglected transfer windows. Players are allowed to age without new faces, and suddenly the intensity that once existed seems to be gone. This will have to be addressed over the next few weeks, with their midfield having a major impact on their defence. Up front, Jurgen Klopp is well positioned, but behind that he needs more creativity and players willing to invest distance and pressure to ease the burden on the defence.
Several names, some already in the Premier League, have been linked with a move to Anfield and we take a look at how Klopp's Red Devils can line up their squad should they succeed in the transfer.
With Mason Mount seemingly close to a move to Manchester United, Klopp's midfield rebuild will not include Chelsea players. However, the Reds look set to sign Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister, and the World Cup winner will step straight into the lead in Liverpool's engine room. Friendly midfielder Khephren Thuram has also emerged as a target this week with reports that the Reds have been contacted about a deal for the 22-year-old, who will partner Mac Allister.
Bayern Munich conductor Ryan Gravenberch has also been linked with a move to Anfield and could be open to a transfer fee. But with Fabinho and Stefan Bajcetic also in Klopp's plans, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will actually pursue their plans to sign three central midfielders.
Elsewhere, Klopp could also look for defensive reinforcements. Liverpool suffered an unusual decline in defense last season and fixing that problem is paramount if the Reds' ambitions are to return to the title. A long-awaited overhaul in midfield should help the Reds defend but Klopp could ramp up his interest in France defender Benjamin Pavard to bolster his full-back options.
The 27-year-old has informed Bayern Munich that he wants to leave this summer and will provide Klopp with other options at centre-back and right-back to cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
