Barcelona are exploring the possibility of participating in the Asian Championship, if banned by UEFA from participating in the European version.

It has been a funny year for Barcelona despite easily winning La Liga for the first time in four years, winning the title with four games remaining.

They always had financial problems at the club, which even prevented star Gavi from being registered to play in the first team for most of the season.

Xavi's side were also humiliated in Europe, where they were knocked out of the Champions League and Europa League ahead of the round of 16.

Off the pitch, they got into trouble with an investigation and alleged bribery over payments to a company linked to the Spanish referee. Barca have vehemently denied any wrongdoing, with club president Joan Laporta even attempting to point the finger at Real Madrid.

However, they are now in danger of missing out on next season's European competition, despite topping La Liga, with UEFA considering banning them.

And it looks like they took that threat seriously and started looking at the possibility of playing in the Asian Championship instead.

According to a report from the Catalan TV show Eleven last month, the club was looking at where they could play in order to maintain a revenue stream and competitiveness from other continents was possible.

It's unclear exactly how they might perform in the competition, but any federation would certainly consider it for the money it could generate.

Undoubtedly, TV companies in Europe will be more likely to buy the television rights of the Asian Championship if Barca play in the tournament.

Should they not feature in an alternative tournament, the Catalan giants will also be looking to play some of the top friendlies during Champions League weeks.

The club are desperate not to miss out on Champions League revenue as they are guaranteed around €50 million for qualifying alone.

Last summer they had to use some 'financial leverage' just to be able to buy the signings that were supposed to secure their future in Europe's elite club competition.
