Footballers sometimes need to take long shots in order to score goals. In the 2022–23 English Premier League (EPL) season, only five players took average shots longer than 25 yards. Who are these long-range shooters?
The one with the longest shot among them all is Youri Tielemans of Leicester City. This Belgium international took 29 shots within the season. The longest of them had an average length of 27.7 yards. It is worthy of note that the central midfielder scored three EPL goals in 2022–23. Two of these strikes were from long range. He is closely followed by James Ward-Prowse, the captain of Southampton. This Englishman took forty shots, which had an average length of 27.1 yards. James' first goal of the season was from long range. In fact, he had a couple of direct free kick goals to his credit within the term.
The third guy among them is Rben Neves. This Portuguese defensive midfielder was in action for Wolverhampton Wanderers during the period in question. The length of his missiles averaged 26.7 yards. Three of his six EPL goals this past season were from long distances. It should be put on record that the Portugal international took many long shots during the term. Enzo Fernández, who is the only new Premier League star among them, had shots with an average distance of 25.7 yards. This makes the Argentinian the non-European with the strongest shot in the English top flight. However, none of his 20 shots ended in goals.
The fifth man on the list is Douglas Luiz, a Brazilian. The former Brazil international made 34 shots, which averaged 25.0 yards for Aston Villa within the season. He had six EPL goals to show for it. For the record, the African with the longest shot is Cheick Doucouré. However, his own length is 0.4 yards less than that of Luiz.
