Former referee Mark Halsey ordered a six-match suspension for Jose Mourinho after the game against Anthony Taylor as his Roma side lost the Europa League final on penalties to Sevilla.
Video emerged of the Roma manager waiting for Taylor in the stadium's parking lot after the game to share his harsh criticism of the Premier League referee's performance, calling the officials a Disgrace. Mourinho also referred to the English referee as 'Spanish' in his post-match press conference.
Taylor received 14 yellow cards, a record for a Europa League final, when the match included nearly 30 minutes of injury time. He also ordered Gabriel Montiel's penalty to be retaken in the penalty shootout after Roma goalkeeper Rui Patricio saved the initial effort but was sent off his sideline with the second being scored and then awarded the trophy to the Spanish team. Furthermore, Mourinho thinks Sevilla's Erik Lamela should have been sent off before the midfielder scored in the penalty shootout.
In her column with The Sun, Halsey firmly put up with Mourinho's antics, writing:
"The post-match actions of Roma owner Mourinho while watching referee Taylor and other match officials were inappropriate, but the abuse was even worse. I've never seen the pattern of it. this horrible behavior of a manager towards an official.
"The referees, like the players, try to play to the best of their ability and Taylor's performance was admirable under extreme pressure. In fact, I'm proud of his performance for the game. Wednesday's final was fierce and an inconclusive situation for officials. Fourth official Michael Oliver had an impossible job due to the level of protests and calls from both sides in 120 minutes.
"It reminded me of a football game on Sunday and the technical area became difficult to control. Both teams lost their discipline and had 16 yellow cards but all the penalties were deserved.
"I feel for Taylor - what else can he do? His only other action is to draw many red cards."
Halsey added that he felt UEFA needed to act, saying:
"UEFA must take the strongest possible action and Mourinho, along with Roma and Sevilla, must now be charged with appalling behavior and failure to control their players. Mourinho was furious in Wednesday's final.
"I will deduct three points from Sevilla and Roma in their upcoming European campaigns with three more suspended for the remainder of the group stage.
"And I will also ban Mourinho - wherever he goes - for six games for his unacceptable behaviour."
Since then, videos have surfaced on social media of Taylor and his family being attacked by Roma thugs at Budapest airport, with PGMOL issuing the following statement:
“PGMOL is aware of videos circulating on social media showing Anthony Taylor and his family being harassed and abused at Budapest airport.
"We are appalled at the gratuitous and cruel abuse directed at Anthony and his family as he attempts to return home after running the UEFA Europa League final. We will continue to give our full support. for Anthony and his family."
