In connection with the rekindled chieftaincy and land issues in the Lukula and Mempeasem villages in the North Gonja District of the Savannah Region, the police have detained almost 100 people.
Security personnel arrested the suspects in Daboya on Friday morning after receiving information.
They are being held by the police pending screening as part of the inquiries.
According to information obtained by Graphic Online, the culprits who are thought to have carried out the brutal attack on the two villages were apprehended from their hiding places.
Attack
At least seven people have died and several more have been injured as a consequence of a fresh chieftaincy and land dispute between the two communities on Thursday.
Many inhabitants, especially women and children, have been forced to relocate, and many homes have been completely destroyed by fire.
What could have caused the violence is unknown. But over time, there have been persistent chieftaincy disputes in the region.
Rival chiefs from the Wasipe Traditional Area in the Savannah Region and the Soo Traditional Area in the North East Region were involved in the battle.
The two traditional territories' borders are where the Lukula community is located.
According to a statement from the police, a gang of around 50 people allegedly broke into the Mempeasem neighbourhood and abducted a 50-year-old male.
When the police responded to the attack, the gang, however, escaped into the jungle.
The abducted victim was eventually freed, and the police were able to seize an AK-47 rifle, 14 rounds of ammunition, seven motorcycles, and two bicycles from the scene of the crime.
After searching the area for the suspects, a bag carrying 240 AK-47 rounds was also found.
According to the police, following violent attacks on the Mempeasem and Lukula villages by rival factions involved in land and chieftaincy conflicts, three people were originally detained while others were being sought.
"On June 1st, 2023, the police responded to another distress call of an attack on the Lukula village by a different gang while on patrol among the communities. The aforementioned suspects started shooting randomly and setting houses on fire while on the spree.
Three suspects were immediately arrested by the police once they were spotted, and they are now being treated at a hospital for gunshot wounds.
One (1) pump-action gun, two (2) single-barrel guns, one long knife, 80 live cartridges, a few talismans, and cowries were found after a search of them, the statement continued.
After bringing about a state of calm, it was stated that the police learned that an 81-year-old man from Lukula village had reportedly been shot on his farm by the ravaging gang. They went to the field and, with the assistance of his children, transported him to the hospital, where he was later declared dead.
