Liverpool are expected to announce a new contract for one of Jurgen Klopp's players in the coming days.
Adrian
Liverpool are expected to soon 'release' the news that Adrian has signed a new contract with the club. The goalkeeper's current contract is due to expire at the end of June but it is reported that he has signed an extension.
Adrian has only made one appearance for Liverpool this season. He played in the Community Shield last July when the Reds beat Manchester City 3-1 at the King Power Stadium. The Spaniard also featured only once last season after collapsing at Anfield. The former West Ham goalkeeper was originally No 2 for Alisson when he signed on a free transfer in August 2019.
He made 18 appearances in his first campaign due to Alisson's injury absence. But the arrival of Caoimhin Kelleher makes him third choice under Jurgen Klopp.
Kelleher often impresses when given opportunities by Klopp, mainly in domestic cup competitions. However, with his long-term future uncertain, Liverpool decided to keep Adrian.
Writing in the Catch Offside column, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano announced the 36-year-old has signed a new contract. Liverpool are expected to announce his stay soon.
Kelleher's lack of football has led him to be linked with a move elsewhere. Speaking in May, Klopp confirmed he wanted the Irishman to stay and also hinted at a deal for Adrian. Klopp says:
"I didn't see… to be honest, I didn't see Caoimh leave. It must have been an extraordinary offer that I started thinking about, I must say.
"Adrian, if we don't say goodbye [already] what does that mean? That he might stay, but if there's nothing on the papers it's still undecided. "We won't [say goodbye] just in case, but I have a pretty good feeling that we [will] continue to work together in this position."
Kelleher is a Republic of Ireland international. His international boss, Stephen Kenny, thinks differently of Klopp and hopes he continues.
Kenny recently told reporters:
"I think [Kelleher is leaving]. Normally it's not fair to talk about a player who is on the move, but he is at a stage where he can be behind one of the best goalkeepers in the world. and it won't get any easier."
"He can't not play. He knows it and he's known it for a while. It is not easy. There's a process you go through with a club like that and I think it wouldn't be a surprise when he moves in this summer, and he knows it."
