Bruno Fernandes has acknowledged that Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, has occasionally had to 'guard' him.
Throughout his three and a half years with the club, Fernandes has regularly been among the Red Devils' finest players, although his conduct on the field has occasionally come under scrutiny.
After Man Utd were humbled 7-0 by rivals Liverpool at Anfield in March, the focus was squarely on Fernandes, and club icons Roy Keane and Gary Neville criticized his behavior and attitude.
In the days that followed, his role as vice-captain became a hot topic as several experts argued that he ought to be fired from Manchester United's executive team.
Before Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester City, Ten Hag publicly defended Fernandes, and the Portugal international talked openly about their relationship.
"I'm aware that he's really happy with the way that I train, the way that I play, the way that I express my emotions and the way that I show my passion for the game," Fernandes told the BBC.
He is aware of my concern. Because of this, you may occasionally find yourself doing things that you shouldn't.
"However, I will never take any action that will reflect poorly on the team, my teammates, or the team as a whole. That shields me from him since he is aware of it.
"I believe that's excellent because he treats you with respect and protects you, but always with conditions attached because, obviously, when you protect someone, you expect them to return the favor, so he can have his justifications for doing so.
"Look, we have to change this, we have to change this, I think you could do it in a different way," he brought me into his office two or three times. We spoke frequently this season.
Harry Maguire is poised to start on the bench when Fernandes leads Man Utd at Wembley on Saturday.
