The Assin North Constituency By-Contest in the Central Region is currently scheduled after the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) chose a candidate for the contest yesterday (June 7).
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) officially announced James Gyakye Quayson as the candidate for the by-election to the electorate on Tuesday, June 6.
With this development, all is prepared for the by-election that the Electoral Commission (EC) has set for June 27, 2023, to choose a new Member of Parliament for the district.
Primary NPP
Charles Opoku, an electrical engineer, was chosen by the NPP as their parliamentary candidate for the by-election during its primary held yesterday in Akonfudi in the Assin North Constituency.
Frederick Freeman Amoah-Kyei, who received 136 votes, lost to Mr. Opoku, a 40-year-old Assin Bereku resident, who received 397 votes.
After he was declared the winner, hundreds of excited NPP supporters flocked to Assin Bereku's streets to celebrate in the open.
From Akonfudi to Assin Bereku, Mr. Opoku travelled in an open-top vehicle while being applauded by the audience.
According to certain party members whose opinions were obtained by the Daily Graphic, Mr. Opoku is kind and trustworthy, making him the perfect candidate for the party to unseat the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Gladys Oppong, one of the ecstatic supporters, asserted that the NPP had chosen well for the by-election.
He is a decent, honest, and modest individual.
With these characteristics, we can win with certainty. Joseph Amoah, another supporter, asserted that the NPP will retake the seat with such a respectable candidate and efforts.
The National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, and the General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, were among the party leaders present during the election.
Mr. Opoku has played a significant role in Assin North politics. While attending Cape Coast Technical University, he was a part of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), the NPP's student wing.
Background
The Assin North Constituency by-election was scheduled for Tuesday, June 27, 2023, by the EC on May 31, 2023, after it received notification from Parliament that the seat had been declared vacant.
This came after the Supreme Court ruled unanimously on May 17 that James Gyakye Quayson's election as the NDC's Member of Parliament (MP) for that seat was invalid.
NDC
Meanwhile, party heavyweights like Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, who will run with former president John Dramani Mahama in 2020, are in the district to boost support for Mr. Quayson, the party's candidate.
