For GH750,000, Maleka Farms Limited, a fish farm enterprise in the Shai-Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region, located at Kadjanya close to Asutsuare, has given office space for the Akuse Police Station.

One of the country's earliest police stations is the Akuse Police Station in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region. It was erected in 1911, at a time when Akuse was the only port where foreign ships could dock to unload cargo from Ghana and other countries.

The early foundation of the police station in Akuse resulted from the necessity to safeguard lives and property due to the presence of businesses like AB Olivant, UAC, and GNTC at the time.

Handover

Maleka Farms' general manager, Roger Aboujaoude, spoke at the ceremony last Friday to officially hand over the facility to the police. He said that when the company first started doing business in the area, the police got to know it and helped it catch and stop thieves who were stealing supplies and other items from the company's site.

He said that the structure serving as the district headquarters for the police in Akuse was dilapidated and in desperate need of repair.

"Due to the building's appalling condition, the corporation chose to create a better structure for the police for the community's benefit and to improve their operations in particular, because Performance is undoubtedly improved by working in a perfect workplace, he continued.

The Inspector General of Police was represented by the Eastern Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Emmanuel Twumasi-Ankrah, who stated that the notion of bringing contemporary policing to the doorsteps of the local population was expensive.

Despite the Akuse Police District's extensive jurisdiction, which includes Kpong, Teye-Kwame, Asutsuare, Volivo, Adakope, and Tokpo, Mr. Twumasi-Ankrah said there were just three police stations in the district, at Akuse, Kpong, and Asutsuare Junction, which served the many settlements.

In order to create police stations in Okwenya, Kpong-Ahudjo, and Volivo, he made a plea to community members and donors, explaining that once that was done, Kpong and Asutsuare would be promoted to police districts, which would lead to the divisionalization of the Akuse district.

Cooperation

Theresa Lardi Awuni, the member of parliament for Okaikwei North, pleaded with the police and local residents to work with Maleka Farm so that it can continue to support the local communities as part of its corporate social responsibility. She added, "What you have seen today is the beginning of better things to come if you continue to cooperate with the benefactor."

Simon Kweku Tetteh, chief executive of Lower Manya Krobo Municipality, asked residents in the Akuse Police Station's operating area to work with the Akuse station of the Ghana Police Service and the municipal assembly to combat crime in the region.
