Nigeria is set to host representatives from over 35 countries at the upcoming 61st Africa Day celebration, which will take place from May 24 to May 27 in Abuja. The announcement was made by Mr. Young Piero, Coordinator and Director of Parliament for the Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific Joint Sessions of the African Union Simulation, during a press briefing in Abuja.

Africa Day marks the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, now succeeded by the African Union (AU). The annual event serves to recognize Africa's achievements while reflecting on the collective challenges faced across the continent.

According to Piero, this year’s celebration will emphasize themes such as continental integration, the concept of a borderless Africa, boosting intra-African trade, cultural exchange, and the AU's Vision 2030, which includes the implementation of a single African passport. The event will also highlight the vital roles of youth and women in Africa's development, and encourage patriotism and the preservation of African cultural heritage.

Piero explained that the 61st edition aims to amplify a unified African voice in driving sustainable development and pan-African progress. He emphasized that this year’s celebration stands out due to extensive collaborations with organizations across Nigeria and the continent that are contributing significantly to building a stronger Africa.

“This is about showcasing Africa’s identity, culture, and uniqueness, while promoting the idea of ‘Africa first,’” he said. “Africa holds immense potential, and we’re creating a vision of a continent that can stand as a global leader.”

In a similar vein, Quadri-Adu Kehinde, President of the Afro-Caribbean Chamber, announced that a liberation walk will be held as part of the activities leading to the 2025 Africa Day. The walk symbolizes freedom and unity, encouraging African nations to move forward collectively.

Additional events will include dialogues on Africa’s growth, empowerment sessions for youths and women, and various cultural showcases. Chairman of the Planning Committee, Phil Roberts, appreciated the Nigerian government’s backing and emphasized that patriotism remains essential for Africa’s advancement.
