The team's first stop was the Sewage Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL) facility in Korle Lagoon, where they witnessed how Ghana processes its liquid waste to produce clean water that can be utilised for irrigation, vehicle washing, aquaculture, and the creation of compost for organic fertiliser.

The Managing Director of SSGL, Mrs. Florence Cobbold, reaffirmed that SSGL has commissioned a study on the use of the clear water by-product for extensive irrigation purposes in conjunction with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and with funding from the European Union.

We now utilise the majority of the recovered water within the facility since we are anticipating study results in 2024, she highlighted.

She said, "We are also utilising the study to develop and enhance Ghana's acceptability of liquid waste-recycled goods.

Prior to the company's establishment, Ghana was releasing its untreated liquid waste into the ocean, she said.

That, she claimed, presented several environmental difficulties, particularly for those residing close to the Korle Lagoon and its surroundings.

But she said that the plant has improved the community's residents' access to a cleaner, healthier, and odor-free environment.

The plant's design capacity is 3000 m3/day, and daily average truck traffic is 300.

The facility has an ISO-certified, fully stocked laboratory to make sure that its operations adhere to the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) and the Authority for Ghanaian Standards (GSA) standards.

Since its founding, SSGL has expanded Kotoku's faecal treatment facility and renovated Accra's Mudor Sewage Treatment Plant.

The Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP) was later visited by the delegation.

Malik Kwabla Ganyo, the plant manager, greeted the team and described it as an integrated waste processing and recycling business set up to collect and process solid waste and generate organic manure for use in agriculture in Ghana and the wider West African area.

He continued by saying that the facility handled the issue of plastic trash by sorting, processing, and recycling it.

We generate high-quality pelletized plastics that are used as raw materials by local businesses to make a variety of plastic products.

According to him, high-calorific burning materials and fuels (refuse-derived fuels) are made from other recovered materials, including textiles, packaging, and other highly flammable materials, for certain businesses that need this energy for their operations.

The Plant Manager stated during an interview that "We understand that little is done in Botswana with regard to waste treatment, but our value proposition to them is that we need to do some form of recovery on the value chain as well as value-render the particular streams of their waste to extend the life-span of their landfills."
