Galamsey Operator Who Threatened to Kill, Rob Akufo-Addo’s Daughter Apologises

A young man involved in illegal mining, commonly known as 'galamsey,' has publicly apologised after threatening to kill and rob President Nana Akufo-Addo's daughter during a highway robbery. The man, identified as Yaw Boakye, made the threats during a viral video in which he expressed his frustration over the government's crackdown on galamsey activities.

In the video, Boakye, visibly angry and holding a machete, claimed that the government's intensified fight against illegal mining had left him and others jobless. He further threatened that he would target the president’s family, specifically mentioning his daughter, in a highway robbery to make ends meet. His remarks quickly spread on social media, attracting widespread condemnation and prompting swift action from the authorities.

The Ghana Police Service launched an investigation and arrested Boakye in a remote village in the Eastern Region, where he had been hiding. He was taken into custody for questioning, and his video was deemed a serious threat to national security.

In a surprising turn of events, Boakye, after a few days in detention, issued a public apology. In his apology, he expressed regret for his actions, claiming that his outburst was made out of desperation and frustration. He admitted that the video was irresponsible and said he had no intention of carrying out the threats.

"I sincerely apologise to President Akufo-Addo, his family, and the people of Ghana. I was frustrated, but that doesn't excuse my actions. I understand the seriousness of my words, and I want to make it clear that I would never harm anyone, let alone the president's daughter," Boakye said during a press conference organised by the police.

The apology has sparked mixed reactions from the public. While some have accepted his apology and attributed his actions to the hardship caused by the government’s crackdown on illegal mining, others believe he should face harsher punishment to deter others from making similar threats.

The police have indicated that Boakye's case is still under investigation, and he may face charges of threatening the peace and endangering public safety. Authorities have also warned that any threats to national security, especially against the president or his family, will not be taken lightly.

The crackdown on illegal mining, spearheaded by President Akufo-Addo’s administration, has been a major issue in Ghana, with many small-scale miners facing difficulties due to the strict measures put in place to protect the environment.
