Stop Politicizing Bawku Conflict – Chieftaincy Minister Warns
In a recent address, the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs issued a stern warning against the politicization of the ongoing Bawku conflict, urging stakeholders to prioritize peace over partisan interests. The Minister emphasized that political interference and the framing of the conflict within political narratives only serve to deepen divisions, fuel tensions, and hinder the pursuit of sustainable solutions.
The Bawku conflict, which has historical roots tied to chieftaincy disputes, has been a longstanding source of tension in the Kusaug Region. Despite several efforts to broker peace, clashes continue to disrupt lives, damage property, and destabilize communities. The Minister pointed out that the involvement of politicians in the dispute often escalates the situation, as opposing parties use the conflict to advance political agendas, ignoring the toll on the affected communities.
Highlighting the human cost of the conflict, the Minister called on both traditional and political leaders to work together to foster unity and collaboration. He expressed disappointment at attempts by some individuals to capitalize on the conflict for personal or political gain, warning that such actions are detrimental to national cohesion. “This conflict transcends politics; it affects livelihoods, disrupts education, and creates an environment of fear and mistrust. Politicizing it is simply not the answer,” he stated.
The Chieftaincy Minister appealed to all parties, including government officials, traditional rulers, and political actors, to support the ongoing peace efforts led by the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and other mediating bodies. He noted that only through a collective approach, grounded in respect for traditional institutions and the rule of law, can the region hope to achieve a long-lasting peace.
Additionally, the Minister encouraged members of the public, especially the youth, to refrain from taking sides or being swayed by political rhetoric. He acknowledged the role of youth in community building and urged them to serve as agents of peace rather than being drawn into violence by political influences.
The government, according to the Minister, remains committed to investing resources and engaging stakeholders in the region to restore stability. The Minister also stressed that the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs is working closely with the National Peace Council, traditional authorities, and community leaders to create open dialogue and address the root causes of the conflict.
As Bawku faces continued security challenges, the Minister’s message reinforces the need for an apolitical approach to resolving the conflict. By focusing on collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect, he believes that Bawku can overcome its challenges and build a foundation for lasting peace and development.
In conclusion, the Minister’s remarks serve as a reminder to all Ghanaians that peace in Bawku is essential for national unity. He called for restraint, urging all citizens to act in ways that contribute to harmony and stability rather than division and discord.
