Controversial Ghanaian prophet, Opambour Ebenezer, popularly known as Prophet 1, has weighed in on the effect that Akua Donkor’s death might have on the upcoming presidential election. In his latest appearance on Prophet 1 TV, the outspoken man of God dismissed claims that the passing of Akua Donkor, the Ghana Freedom Party's flag bearer, will damage the prospects of former president John Dramani Mahama, who is the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate.
Some political analysts have speculated that Mahama could suffer a setback due to Akua Donkor’s death, particularly because of the anticipated shift in the ballot paper positions. Over recent weeks, some of Mahama's supporters have encouraged voters to simply select the candidate at the number 8 position on the ballot paper, traditionally occupied by the former president. With Donkor’s passing, some now believe that this messaging could be disrupted if Mahama is reassigned a different ballot number.
Despite these concerns, Opambour has remained steadfast in his conviction that Mahama's electoral fortunes will not be influenced by this development. Speaking candidly, he remarked, “Number 8 or not, Mahama will win.” According to him, Mahama’s popularity goes beyond any ballot number or position on paper. “Among the presidential candidates on the ballot box, John Mahama is different, and many Ghanaians know him by face, so it wouldn’t affect him as many have said,” Opambour stated.
He further argued that Mahama’s reputation and image are firmly ingrained in the minds of Ghanaians, making him easily recognizable even if his position on the ballot changes. For Opambour, Mahama’s popularity is rooted not just in his previous leadership but also in his status as a familiar figure to the electorate.
Akua Donkor’s death has sparked various speculations, with some interpreting it as an unexpected twist in the political landscape. However, Opambour’s words reflect a strong belief that the former president’s candidacy stands firm on its own merits, regardless of logistical adjustments on election day. As Ghanaians prepare to head to the polls, Opambour’s endorsement and his words may resonate with those who already support Mahama, casting aside any notions that the number on the ballot could sway the outcome of the race.
