Richard Ahiagbah, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has lauded Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his leadership in steering Ghana's economy through challenging times. Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on November 23, 2024, Ahiagbah described Dr. Bawumia’s contributions as pivotal to Ghana’s economic recovery.
He noted that Dr. Bawumia’s stewardship of the Economic Management Team has been instrumental in navigating the country through domestic and global challenges, including the economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Ahiagbah, the Vice President’s pragmatic approach has positioned the economy for sustainable growth.
“When evaluating Dr. Bawumia’s performance as chair of the Economic Management Team, it’s important to consider the broader trajectory of the economy. He has provided steady leadership during a turbulent period, stabilizing the economy amidst unprecedented external shocks,” Ahiagbah said.
Addressing Economic Turbulence
Highlighting the impact of COVID-19, Ahiagbah credited Dr. Bawumia with averting an economic collapse and laying the groundwork for recovery. He emphasized that despite significant challenges, the Vice President's efforts have yielded tangible results.
“COVID-19 was a consequential event that tested economies globally, and Ghana was no exception. However, from 2023 onwards, we’ve witnessed a sustainable recovery. The economy has been expanding steadily, with an average growth rate of 5.8%. This underscores Dr. Bawumia’s exceptional ability to manage crises and drive progress,” he added.
Ahiagbah also noted that Ghana’s economy would have achieved greater expansion and created more jobs if not for the pandemic’s disruptions. Nevertheless, he expressed optimism about the path forward, attributing much of the progress to Dr. Bawumia's economic policies and collaborative efforts with President Nana Akufo-Addo.
The comments come as Ghana continues to navigate its post-pandemic economic recovery. Government initiatives have aimed to stabilize key sectors, with Dr. Bawumia at the forefront of digital transformation, financial inclusion, and monetary policy reforms.
According to Ahiagbah, the Vice President’s leadership has been marked by strategic foresight and resilience. “If we are to measure Dr. Bawumia’s contributions objectively, it’s clear that his leadership has been stellar. Ghana’s recovery trajectory speaks to his competence and commitment,” he asserted.
As Ghana prepares for its 2024 elections, Ahiagbah urged Ghanaians to recognize Dr. Bawumia’s achievements in stabilizing the economy and guiding it toward a brighter future. He emphasized that while challenges remain, the current progress reflects the Vice President’s effective economic management during unprecedented times.
