Ahead of Ghana’s December 7 general elections, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akufo Dampare, and the Police Management Board dedicated Sunday, November 24, 2024, to visiting churches nationwide to advocate for peace. This initiative, reported by Citi Newsroom, highlights the critical role of religious institutions in ensuring a harmonious electoral process.
Speaking at the Church of Pentecost in Accra New Town, Dr. Dampare expressed gratitude to the congregation for their prayers for the nation. He emphasized the need to complement prayers with action to sustain peace before, during, and after the elections. He noted that the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders have thus far contributed to a calm pre-election atmosphere.
“We want to thank you for allowing yourselves to be used as vessels of the Lord. The peace we have experienced during this election season is unprecedented, and it’s a reflection of our shared commitment to fostering harmony,” the IGP remarked.
Dr. Dampare encouraged all Ghanaians to support the police by adhering to security protocols, reporting suspicious activities, and refraining from acts that could undermine peace. He assured the public of the police service's readiness to maintain law and order during the elections, pledging professionalism and impartiality in handling any disruptions.
The outreach program saw police officials engaging with congregations across the country. Churches were urged to leverage their influence to promote messages of tolerance, unity, and respect among citizens. This partnership underscores the police service’s belief that peace is a shared responsibility requiring active participation from all segments of society.
The IGP’s message comes at a crucial time as Ghana prepares for another milestone in its democratic journey. Peaceful elections remain pivotal in reinforcing the nation’s status as a model of stability and democracy in Africa. By fostering cooperation with faith-based organizations, the Ghana Police Service is taking proactive steps to ensure the elections are free of conflict.
