In addressing the people of Walewale, his hometown in the North East Region, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia made an unforgettable statement in his recent campaign tour ahead of the 2024 general elections. He told an anecdote that really struck at the very core of the community as he tried to relate to the locals and underscore the government's efforts to address their needs.

"When your mother is at the funeral, you cannot be denied Tuo Zaafi," Bawumia erupted to deafening laughter and applause from the gathering. The utterance was deeply cultural and implied a promise by the government not to allow any individual to be shut out of basic needs and services, especially in times of distress. Tuo Zaafi is a popular traditional dish among the northern Ghanaian people and represents an ingredient of communitarian assistance and attention towards one's neighbor in need.

Bawumia has always sought to present himself as a leader who understands the struggles of northern Ghanaians, having been born in Walewale. These were not just comments about food; they captured his general appeal of inclusion and social welfare, particularly for the most disadvantaged. He said much about the government's commitment to social protection, infrastructure, and economic opportunities for all Ghanaians, irrespective of their region.

He also pointed to the massive developmental strides happening under the leadership of President Nana Akufo-Addo, especially in the Northern Region: road infrastructure, access to healthcare, and educational opportunities that are transforming the region over the past few years.

"The progress we have made together cannot be overstated," Bawumia remarked. "From roads to education, from healthcare to technology, we have built a foundation that will propel us forward into a brighter future."

The Vice President's remarks came amidst continuous interactions with different segments of the populace ahead of the 2024 elections, amidst his desire to retain northern Ghana and the wider electorate behind his bid for the presidency. Bawumia is seeking reelection on the ticket of President Akufo-Addo, who is equally eyeing a third term in office.

As election day approaches, Bawumia’s message of unity, inclusivity, and continued development is expected to play a significant role in galvanizing support in his home region.
