Presidential aspirant Alan Kyerematen has unveiled a transformative plan for the Free SHS program, addressing its sustainability and the critical need for structured pathways for graduates to transition into further education or employment. During the Presidential Encounters 2024 on November 22, Kyerematen acknowledged the importance of the Free SHS policy but expressed concerns about its future. He argued that while the initiative has been successful in offering free secondary education, it lacks provisions for what happens after students finish secondary school. He raised the key question, “After Free SHS, what next?” Kyerematen stressed that without a clear path forward for graduates, the policy’s impact could be undermined, and he proposed reforms aimed at addressing this gap under his Great Transformational Plan (GTP).
Kyerematen’s proposed reforms focus on five main areas: financial sustainability, infrastructure improvement, curriculum modernization, teacher capacity building, and creating opportunities for graduates to either enter tertiary education or the workforce. He emphasized the need to secure sustainable funding to ensure the continuation of Free SHS. Furthermore, Kyerematen pointed out that inadequate infrastructure, including poor classrooms and dormitories, must be addressed to improve the quality of education provided under the policy. Additionally, he called for a reevaluation of the current curriculum, suggesting it needs to be updated to better prepare students for the modern job market. Teacher training and administrative capacity would also be a priority, ensuring educators and school staff can effectively deliver quality education and manage schools.
To address the issue of graduates' transitions, Kyerematen introduced a compulsory one-year apprenticeship and internship program designed to provide practical skills and hands-on training in fields like entrepreneurship and vocational trades. This initiative would help students gain valuable experience while also preparing them for self-employment or formal employment. For those pursuing entrepreneurial ventures, Kyerematen proposed access to government-backed funding, mentorship, and resources to help them establish businesses. He also introduced the Health Screening Booths Scheme, where graduates could operate booths offering health services while earning an income. This would create job opportunities and improve healthcare access in underserved areas. Additionally, Kyerematen committed to creating recruitment pathways into the security services for graduates who wish to pursue careers in this sector. Lastly, he emphasized the importance of providing financial support to graduates wishing to continue their studies at the tertiary level, ensuring that financial constraints do not limit their educational opportunities. Through these reforms, Kyerematen aims to create a more robust Free SHS program that not only offers access to education but equips students with the tools to succeed in a rapidly evolving world.
