Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, is standing firm despite his team enduring a challenging period, with five consecutive defeats. This marks their worst run since Guardiola’s first season at City in 2016-17. In the face of intense scrutiny, with questions surrounding his players' age, injury issues, and the recent form of star striker Erling Haaland, Guardiola refuses to shift away from his established tactics. He made it clear that he believes the success City has experienced—four consecutive Premier League titles and a historic Treble in 2023—is due to a specific process that has worked over time. When asked about the possibility of changing his approach, Guardiola responded, “What should I change?” stressing that he believes in the long-term fundamentals of his coaching philosophy. He urged for patience as the team navigates this rough patch, insisting that City’s legacy and success are worth defending, even in tough times.

Despite the mounting pressure, Guardiola has made it clear that he does not intend to make drastic changes. He explained that injuries have played a significant role in the team’s struggles, with key players such as Rodri unavailable and others not yet at full fitness. Guardiola pointed to the 4-0 loss against Tottenham, a result he felt was misleading. He noted that City had 26 shots in the game, and based on expected goals (xG), they should have won. This belief, according to him, further reinforces that no fundamental changes are necessary. Guardiola stated that what is needed is for his injured players to recover and return to form, as well as for the team to focus on creating more chances and conceding fewer goals. He dismissed any suggestions that the team’s current difficulties were due to lack of effort or focus, explaining that they simply need to adapt and perform better in key areas.

Guardiola’s unwavering belief in his methods is not only a sign of his confidence but also an acknowledgment of the pressure he faces to deliver results. While he recognized that the current situation is difficult, he remains convinced that it will pass. Guardiola noted that City has faced similar setbacks in the past and has always found a way to recover. Looking ahead to upcoming fixtures, including the Champions League match against Feyenoord and the Premier League clash with Liverpool, Guardiola is focused on achieving positive results. "One day we’re going to win a game, and our mind will be clear," he said optimistically. Guardiola remains determined to stay the course, confident that, in time, his team’s resilience and ability to bounce back will once again put them on track for success.
