Former Hearts of Oak forward Charles Taylor has raised concerns about the structure of the Black Stars' technical team under head coach Otto Addo. Taylor specifically criticized the appointment of John Paintsil as an assistant coach, arguing that the former defender lacks the necessary experience to contribute effectively to the team. In an interview with Angel TV, Taylor questioned whether Otto Addo or the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is responsible for selecting the technical staff. He suggested that a reshuffle is needed to bring in more qualified and experienced personnel, as the current team does not meet the standards required to ensure Ghana's success in international football.
Taylor also expressed doubts about Otto Addo's ability to lead the team to major achievements, particularly pointing to Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Despite the abundance of talented players in the squad, Taylor criticized the technical team's inability to secure qualification from a group featuring Sudan, Angola, and Niger. He claimed that the lack of experience and inefficiency within the backroom staff is a significant reason for the team’s poor performance. Taylor's critique aligns with Addo’s own reported concerns, which he shared during a meeting with the GFA Executive Council on November 27. Addo highlighted the technical staff’s inexperience as a key factor in the team’s shortcomings.
The GFA has yet to take concrete action on the matter, as the meeting ended without a resolution. Officials stated that further consultations with stakeholders, including political figures, would be required before deciding on Addo’s future as head coach or implementing changes to the technical team. Taylor's remarks underscore the growing frustration among fans and analysts over the Black Stars' decline in performance, emphasizing the urgent need for restructuring and stronger leadership. These developments come at a critical time when Ghana’s FIFA ranking has also dropped, fueling calls for immediate reforms to restore the team’s reputation and competitiveness on the international stage.
