The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Awutu Senya East has urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to deploy additional security personnel to the constituency ahead of the upcoming elections to prevent a repeat of the violence witnessed during the 2020 elections at the Steps to Christ Registration Centre.
In 2020, violence erupted at the centre when armed individuals fired into a crowd, resulting in one person being injured by gunshot wounds.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, November 30, the NDC Youth Organiser for Awutu Senya East, Nash Nyande Adams, revealed that the party has received intelligence suggesting that some of the individuals involved in the 2020 disturbances have returned to the constituency just days before the elections.
Adams warned that the likelihood of violence is high and called on the IGP to take proactive measures to ensure peace. He also appealed for increased vigilance by law enforcement agencies at polling stations to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and ensure votes are counted transparently, without interference.
“We have received intelligence that some of the individuals who fired gunshots into the crowd at the Steps to Christ Centre during the 2020 elections are back in the constituency ahead of this election. We urge the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to act swiftly and decisively to prevent a repeat of the 2020 incident,” said Adams.
He emphasized that the IGP must take immediate action in response to the threat, warning that ignoring this intelligence could lead to dangerous consequences.
“As NDC members in Awutu Senya East, we are committed to ensuring that the will of the people is respected. If the police fail to protect us, we will have no choice but to protect ourselves and our members,” Adams declared.
Additionally, the Youth Organiser raised concerns over the ongoing destruction of campaign materials belonging to the party’s parliamentary candidate, Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunnor. He revealed that NDC billboards and posters have been repeatedly targeted by individuals, but despite numerous reports to the police, no arrests have been made.
“We call on the IGP to deploy a dedicated task force to investigate and arrest those responsible for the destruction of NDC billboards and posters. Failure to act will only embolden these individuals to continue their illegal actions. The NDC will no longer tolerate this blatant impunity,” Adams concluded.
The NDC is demanding immediate action to ensure the safety and security of all candidates, supporters, and voters in the constituency ahead of the election.
